ANZAC DAY – a Boomer Tribute

Lest We Forget

Lest We Forget

Thank you to each soldier, each family,  each country who gave of itself to give us the freedom we live each day. Thank you for my opportunities, those for my children, and all my future generations.  For without you and your sacrifice, the greatest of which is your life, my wonderful country and all it offers would not be so.

It saddens me when some say that we are glorifying war by remembering our fallen comrades.  What a naïve, untouched by war, sentimentality.  How lucky we are to be in that position but how did we get there?

As a country I know we have learnt from past wars.  My parents were Polish POWs and were great at differentiating between enemies and those that happen to be of a certain culture.  During my very early childhood years a wonderful German family lived in harmony with us in my parents granny flat (converted garage). My family welcomed them as they were displaced too and looking to rebuild their lives.

Remembering war does not glorify it.  It allows us to reflect, to acknowledge the sacrifice of each life given in battle for me, for you, for all here today living the Australian dream.

I thank God every day that my parents were saved and accepted by Australia where they found the right to speak, to pray, to learn, to teach, to share and to remember our fallen heroes.  For without our soldiers’ acts of bravery and sacrifice I wouldn’t be here today writing my tribute to each and every one.   Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I will never forget that is my promise to you.
