Keep the Marriage Alive

Boy meets girl, girl meets boy, a sparkle appears from the aether, time slows to a crawl, birds are whistling, the sun is shining, your heart’s a thumpin’, you may even break into a sweat, you nervously approach, the first date, courtship, marriage, children and you all live happily ever after. It’s the All-American dream we share in all countries(doesn’t sound quite the same if we call it the All-Papua-New Guinean dream but it’s all good!).

Wedding

Welcome to the new Disney creation – DREAM-ON WORLD.

Oh don’t spike up, cynicism is like sarcasm – poor humour but humour nevertheless.

And I should respect our new found marriage compatriots and add “boy meets boy, and girl meets girl”. Welcome to the new “world”. There I go again!

On with it. Even though marriage is now less popular and divorce rates are higher most of us still see it as the Holy Grail to bliss and eternal happiness. And, quite frankly, so it can and should be.

But, yes wait for it, it comes at a cost.

Our care and attention. Oh dear, that again……but read on.

Remember that girl or boy you first met with the stars in their eyes, dreaming of the future. Well, they’re still there. Whether it’s you or your partner they’re still there. And we all still want the same thing even though a little life has got in the way – yes, bliss and happiness.

So here are a few thoughts about care and attention.

  • Begin, if you’ve forgotten, to treat your partner as a special person again. They were then and still are.
  • Jump out of any rut you may be in. Get out and enjoy the world again – together. There is so much life going on around us but we are sitting home watching the reality TV shows.
  • Bring home a gift. It doesn’t need to be expensive – just thoughtful. “A leaf from a tree I was walking past when I thought of you my darling”
  • A romp in the hay in a strange location perhaps or maybe a candlelit seduction.
  • Cook up an old favourite or create a new one.
  • Go for a walk on the beach or in the hills or better still get on a plane to a place with beaches or hills or even better still jump out of the plane together. Ok that may have gone too far but you get the drift. Care and attention.

These are a few ideas and comment back with as many as you can think of. We are here to help each other.

You can say we owe it to our partners but here’s the rub. What we give, we get back ten-fold.

We owe it to ourselves.
