HANGOVER CURES – have yourself a “merry” little Christmas

images-2What’s the best way to avoid a hangover? A question I’m often asked and especially at this the merriest time of the year.  Answer:  don’t drink!

Well, we all know that isn’t going to happen so lets at least try to ready ourselves (yes me included) before heading out to party.

BEFORE HEADING OUT

1)  Look at eating something before heading out.  This will be the one time I advocate a fatty meal, as it slowly digests and can help protect the stomach from the irritating effects of alcohol.  Or you can drink a large glass of milk this helps slow down the alcohol absorption rate.   (Remember slows it down DOES NOT negate it)

2)  Take a multi  mineral tablet

3)   Take milk thistle capsule around 300 – 350 mgs on going out (one on coming home)

WHILE OUT

4)  Number one rule is WATER (can be mineral or soda water);  for every drink of alcohol consumed ensure the next is a glass of water.  Don’t drink sweet fizzy drinks as they help speed up the amount of alcohol going into the blood stream

5)  Remember the big hangover antagonists are red wine, brandy and port

HOME AGAIN

6)Drink a full glass of water before going to bed. If sick of  water have half a glass of orange juice with water as Vitamin C helps speed up alcohol metabolism by the liver.  If you are like me a enjoy a cuppa on getting home opt for a herbal one like camomile

7)Milk Thistle capsule x 1  before bed (helps liver)

GETTING UP NEXT DAY

OMG you’re shaking and the head is pounding!!  What a night, fun at the time but now the why and how did this happen?  Couple of reasons, dehydration being one ( yep forgot the water didn’t you?!).  Remember our brain is 75% water so basically it shrinks and pain results.  The other is low blood sugar levels.  Alcohol is rich in sugar causing the body to release too much insulin which in turn brings down sugar levels too far. Result headache and the hungers.  Therefore:-

8)rehydration is back on priority list, water, soda water, mineral, chamomile tea.  DO NOT drink caffeinated drinks like coffee which narrows blood vessels which then cause increased pressure that can lead to more head pain.

9) eat a low gi meal ie toast with jam, fruit smoothie, porridge, to help slowly bring up sugar levels.

10) multi mineral vitamin – avoid vitamin c today as may cause irritation of the stomach

11) homoeopathic remedy Nux Vomica diluted in water and sipped every few hours throughout the day

Hope this helps in adding to your celebratory nights out.  Remember less of the alcohol and more of the water makes for a happier you in the morning :-))

I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you, your family and loved ones a wonderful, peaceful festive season.  Hope santa surprises you with something deliciously unexpected.  Stay happy, healthy and safe until we share again in 2014.

Evie

(I’ve not mentioned pharmaceuticals like a paracetamol like Panadol or Nurofen but a couple before going to bed with a large glass of water have been known to help with the headache. )
